Temporal and spatial distribution characteristics and significance of aftershocks of great earthquakes on different edges of Songpan-Garze block

英文摘要 | Songpan-Garze block, located in the north of the Tibetan Plateau, is an important area for understanding the expansion of the plateau. In recent years, great earthquakes occurred frequently at different edges of the block (Sichuan Wenchuan M(W)7.9 earthquake in 2008, Qinghai Yushu M(W)6.9 earthquake in 2010, Sichuan Lushan M(W)6.6 earthquake in 2013, Sichuan Jiuzhaigou M(W)6.5 earthquake in 2017 and Qinghai Madoi M(W)7.4 earthquake in 2021). However, there are few studies on the comparisons of aftershock characteristics of these earthquakes, regardless of 'revealing the differences of block structures at different locations from the perspective of focal evolution'. Based on catalogs shared by China Earthquake Network Center (CENC) in the past 13 years (January 1, 2008-November 30, 2020), we relocate aftershocks by HypoDD and study the aftershock evolution of the great earthquakes in the Songpan-Garze block. The results show that there are differences in the temporal and spatial characteristics of aftershock sequences at different locations of the block: (1) Yushu earthquake in the southern margin of the block has foreshocks, while other mainshocks do not have foreshocks; (2) Yushu earthquake in the southern margin of the block and Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes in the eastern margin are both located at the conjugate faults, while others do not; (3) Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes show unilateral rupture, while others show bilateral rupture; (4) The area with high aftershocks density is located around coseismic slip area. Combining both the tectonic background and temporal-spatial aftershock patterns, we point out that the temporal and spatial distribution of aftershocks at different locations of the block is mainly constrained by the local structure of the block: The roughness and heterogeneity of Longmenshan fault zone and Yushu fault zone are higher than that of the East Kunlun fault zone on the northern edge of the block; The physical property difference between the east and west sides of the Longmenshan fault zone is stronger than that of other fault zones; Sichuan basin subducts toward Songpan-Garze block, while the sub-blocks just stand next to each other in the northern and southern borders respectively. In the future, aftershock identification based on deep learning will be an important way to obtain the material attributes, geometric shape and contact relationship of block edge quantitatively. |
