Developmental trajectory of cerebral lateralization

The pattern of lateralization in the developing brain partly reveals the maturation of the brain and provides a reliable reference for researchers to assess whether the brain is developing normally. Functions associated with distinct patterns of brain lateralization related to functions such as language and visuospatial ability have attracted the attention of researchers for a long time, while the trajectories of developmental lateralization patterns in various brain regions across the brain is still poorly understood. In this study, we divided the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data of subjects aged 8-21 years from Lifespan Human Connectome Project Development (HCP-D) into different groups according to their age and used the support vector machine (SVM) to investigate the distinguishability of the lateralization patterns in different age groups by classification accuracy. We found that the changing rate of lateralization patterns slows down with age and the onset age of maturation of lateralization patterns varies across brain regions.
