Surface chemical properties of coral powder and its effect on hydration and pore structure of cement slurry

英文摘要 | Coral powder as a mineral admixture to replace part of the cement can not only greatly reduce the construction cost of coral islands and reefs, but also reduce the carbon dioxide produced by cement production and trans-portation. The role of coral powder in cement system and the effects of coral powder on hydration mechanisms and properties of cement slurry are revealed at macro, micro and nano scale. The results show that the hydration kinetics of coral powder-cement slurries can be divided into three phases: nucleation and crystal growth (NG), phase boundary reaction (I), and diffusion (D). Compared with coarse coral powder, fine coral powder has stronger chemisorption of Ca2+ in solution, which accelerates the early hydration of coral powder-cement slurries and advances the time of acceleration period. Moreover, coral powder promotes nucleation formation and growth by chemisorption of Ca2+, which results in more hydrated calcium silicate(C-S-H) and calcium hy-droxide (CH) generation. Meanwhile, the positively charged coral powder repels with the positively charged cement, thus improving the fluidity of mortar. The reaction degree of coral powder with C3A is low, however, coral powder effectively inhibits the conversion of ettringite (AFt) to monosulfate (AFm). |
