Effect of organic solvents on the preparation of silica microspheres by hydrolysis of TEOS

中文摘要Based on the well-known Stober method silica microspheres were prepared by hydrolysis of tetraethoxy silane (TEOS) in alcohol-water mixed solvents using ammonia as catalyst. Silica microspheres were obtained whose particle size ranged from 120 similar to 1140 nm, and the products were investigated by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The results indicated that the type of the solvents had significant influence on the diameter and particle size distribution of the silica microspheres. Formation mechanism was also discussed in detail.
