Provenance transition of the Mesoproterozoic-Neoproterozoic Xuhuai Basin: Constraining the accretion of the Northern Qinling Terrane with the North China Craton

英文摘要 | Dispute exists over the accretion timing of the North Qinling Terrane (NQT) to North China Craton (NCC), and the Bagongshan Group (BGG) of the Xuhuai Basin of southeastern NCC provides a window to constrain the accretion process. Integrated field investigation, and element geochemistry and detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf isotope analyses, on the BGG provide important constraints on its depositional age and provenance change. The Wushan Formation in the lower BGG is characterized by ultra-high maturity, and detrital zircons of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic (especially similar to 2.35 Ga) and dominantly negative epsilon(Hf)(t) values. The Liulaobei and Sishilichangshan formations in the upper BGG are characterized by high maturity, and detrital zircons clustering between 1.9 and 0.98 Ga with dominantly positive epsilon(Hf)(t) values. The depositional age of the BGG is limited to 1.18-0.94 Ga, placing the Mesoproterozoic-Neoproterozoic boundary between the lower and upper Liulaobei Formation. The Wushan Formation was deposited in a passive continental margin basin, sourced from an EWstriking Paleoproterozoic belt to the south of the Xuhuai Basin, as represented by the Taihua complex in the southern NCC. In contrast, the Liulaobei and Sishilichangshan formations were formed in a collisional basin, derived from a Grenvillian orogen, as represented by the NQT. The accretion of NQT to NCC started before deposition of the Liulaobei Formation at ca. 1.18 Ga, related to the assembly of supercontinent Rodinia. Combined with recent paleomagnetic and paleontological data, it is supported that the NQT is a missing piece of the Grenvillian orogen between southeastern NCC and northwestern Laurentia in the reconstruction of supercontinent Rodinia. |
