Microplastic occurrences, transport, and quantification and associated effects on primary productivity and carbon cycling processes in freshwater ecosystems

英文摘要 | Microplastic (MP) research has mostly focused on individual organisms while few focus on the functional processes participated by multiple organisms. Thus, a comprehensive introduction of biogeochemical carbon (C) transfer via food chain is still missing from the available knowledgebase. Accordingly, this study analyzes potential MP sources and distribution, abundance, and transport patterns in freshwater ecosystems. Potential effects of MPs on freshwater ecosystem C cycling are also systematically determined, including direct effects on primary productivity and how characteristics of MP pollutants indirectly impact primary producers. Results show that MPs generally have an inhibitory effect on primary productivity, photosynthetic activity, and primary producer growth. The main pathways that impact C cycling processes via primary producers in freshwater ecosystems are through damage to cell membranes and DNA of primary producers, through the differential expression of C functional genes of primary producers, and through the inhibition effect on photosynthetic activities of the primary producers. |
