中文摘要Breathing is a vital metabolic process that transports oxygen from the external environment into cells within tissues to provide energy, and subsequently removes carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes. The rhythm of respiration, fundamental to human life, has been shown to modulate sensory and cognitive processing. On the other hand, bistable perception, a phenomenon where an observer perceives the same stimulus in two different ways and experiences dynamic switches between the two percepts, provides a unique window into the mechanisms underlying the generation of conscious content. The current study consists of two experiments using different types of bistable stimuli to explore the impact of respiratory rhythm on the dynamic processes associated with bistable perception. Experiment 1 behaviorally assessed the relationship between the respiratory cycle and various forms of bistable perception, including binocular rivalry, Necker cube, and the switching direction of motion with structure-from-motion displays (rotating spheres). Experiment 2 then employed steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) to track the cortical representations of the conflicting stimulus components (frequencytagging) while observers indicated their subjective perception through button presses and their respirations were simultaneously recorded. We focused on two types of bistable perception: binocular rivalry and the switching direction of motion with structure-from-motion displays. Our results revealed a significant positive correlation between the respiratory frequency and the switching frequency of bistable perception. Moreover, the switching of bistable perception for the rotating spheres predominantly occurred during the transition from inhalation to exhalation and at the onset of exhalation. In addition, for binocular rivalry, greater amplitude differences between the two tagged frequencies were observed during inhalation, suggesting heightened competition during this phase of the respiratory cycle. These findings shed light on the interplay between respiratory rhythm and conscious perception, and contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying the respiratory regulation of the dynamics of conscious perception.
英文摘要呼吸是新陈代谢的过程,将环境中的氧气带入体内各组织中的细胞,使细胞获得能量,并将这些细胞中的二氧化碳及代谢废物移出。呼吸节律是人类的基本生命节律,过往研究表明呼吸调制了我们对感觉信号的处理及认知加工。双稳态知觉指的是观察者对同样的刺激产生两种不同的知觉,且知觉内容在二者间切换 的心理现象,这一现象为探查意识动态产生的机制提供了窗口。本文通过两个实验,使用不同的诱发双稳态知觉的刺激材料,探讨呼吸节律对双稳态知觉动态过程的影响。 研究一从行为层面考察了双眼竞争、内克尔立方体、两可的运动结构(旋转 的球)等不同的双稳态知觉形式与呼吸周期的关系。研究二则使用稳态视觉诱发 电位范式标定冲突刺激成分,借助脑电技术进一步考察了呼吸调节双眼竞争和两 可运动结构这两种双稳态知觉的机制。 结果发现:①双稳态知觉切换频率与呼吸频率显著正相关;②对两可运动结 构类型的双稳态知觉切换更多地发生在吸气向呼气的转换阶段及呼气刚开始的 阶段;③对于双眼竞争来说,吸气阶段的标记频段振幅差更大,竞争更激烈。 通过揭示不同类型的双稳态刺激随呼吸周期产生的不同的周期性知觉体验 和大脑活动模式,本研究增进了对呼吸节律与意识动态产生机制的理解。
