英文摘要Greenly and efficiently reinforcing epoxy on both the mechanical properties and the fire safety is always desired for a nanodiamond (ND). Herein, the special sp(2)@sp(3) effect was found to answer the problem. Abandoning traditional energy-intensive methods, green, efficient, and energy-saving ball milling was successfully designed to transform ND from sp(3) carbon to sp(2)@sp(3) carbon (cND). The sp(2)@sp(3) structure was verified by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. cND exhibited overall advantages over ND and successfully reinforced epoxy on both mechanical properties (tensile test, impact, and dynamic mechanical analysis) and fire safety [limited oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter]. Especially, with only 2 wt % cND in epoxy, the impact strength was increased from 7.2 +/- 0.7 kJ/m(2) for neat epoxy to 25.9 +/- 0.2 kJ/m(2); the LOI value (26.8 +/- 0.2%) was 22.4% higher than that of neat epoxy (21.9 +/- 0.2%), and it could be further extended to 29.5 +/- 0.2%. Based on the thermogravimetric, differential thermogravimetric analysis, XPS, and scanning electron microscopy results, the impressive ability of cND to catalyze the char formation in the oxygen-poor atmosphere, the nice dispersion of cND in epoxy, and the strong interaction between cND and epoxy were found to result in superior fire safety and mechanical performances of cND/epoxy composites. The sp(2)@sp(3) effect of cND even defeated the free radical scavenging effect of carbon nanotubes on improving the fire safety of epoxy. Finally, the reinforcing mechanisms on both mechanical and fire safety properties of epoxy by cND were proposed.
