英文摘要 | Background: Poetry education is crucial for cultural transmission, yet the appeal and efficacy of the traditional method of repetitive recitation are often questioned. Singing as an alternative memorization strategy presents a promising approach, though empirical support for its effectiveness remains limited. Aims: This study aims to explore the impacts of singing versus recitation on the memorization of classical Chinese poems in preschool children across three experiments. Samples: A total of 148 native Mandarin-speaking children aged 4-6 years participated. Methods: In Experiment 1, we compared the memorization effectiveness (duration, accuracy and fluency) of singing and recitation among 4-5-year-old children. Experiment 2 assessed the long-term retention of these memorization benefits six months later with the same participants. Experiment 3 further investigated the influence of poetry complexity on memorization efficacy across three learning strategies (recitation, singing, and singing with additional meaning explanation) in 5-6-year-old children. Results: Singing facilitated faster, more accurate, and more fluent poetry memorization compared to recitation, with significant advantages in long-term retention and recall fluency that persisted for at least six months. The mnemonic superiority of singing was maintained even with increased poetry complexity, and further enhanced by the addition of meaning explanations. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that singing is an effective tool for enhancing poem memorization in preschool children. We propose potential cognitive mechanisms underlying these effects and suggest implications for educational practice. |
