Schaufussinus gen. nov., a mosaic stem-group Pselaphitae from Eocene Baltic amber (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae)

| 英文摘要 | The poorly known fossil record of the ant-loving beetle supertribe Pselaphitae during the Eocene is limited to two extant and six extinct genera originated from Baltic amber, mostly described by SCHAUFUSS in 1890, whose material has been lost and was presumably destroyed during World War II. Here, we describe Schaufussinus longiscapus gen. et sp. nov from the Eocene of Europe, and interpret its detailed anatomy using X-ray microtomography. The new taxon possesses 1) a greatly protruding rostrum of the head, 2) a moderately tumid submental region, 3) a multiply sulcate pronotum with a complex foveal pattern, 4) widely separated meso- and metacoxae, 5) a dorsally exposed tergite III and a well-developed sternite III, 6) paratergal foveae on segments V and VI, and 7) a single pretarsal claw of all legs, showing a mosaic morphology relating to modem Arhytodini and Pselaphini. Our discovery sheds new light on the palaeodiversity and ancestral traits of a currently well-established pselaphine lineage on a Laurasia-derived continent during the middle to late Eocene, and constrains the divergence time of Arhytodini + Pselaphini between 45.0 - 38.0 to 24 -20 Ma. |
