英文摘要Understanding Late Cretaceous terrestrial climate changes and their influence on dinosaur evolution is essential for unraveling the tempo and causes of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction 66.0 million years ago (Ma). However, the precise impact of regional climate change on dinosaur evolution remains unclear, largely due to the lack of reliable high-temporal-resolution records of local dinosaur fossils and continuous climate records from dinosaur-inhabited areas. Here, we employ an environmental magnetism approach alongside sedimentary facies analysis to investigate climatic information preserved in the dinosaur fossil-rich sedimentary sequence of the Shanyang Basin in central China. Environmental magnetic parameters of the sediments reveal a gradual increase in precipitation from 68.0 Ma, peaking at 66.2 Ma, consistent with global paleoclimate records. Our analysis indicates a correlation between the abundance of dinosaur fossils in the Shanyang Basin and climatic changes. As precipitation and temperature increased, the presence of dinosaur fossils gradually declined. Notably, during the last 0.4 million years of the Cretaceous period, no dinosaur fossils were discovered in this basin. Most dinosaur fossils in the region were located in floodplain environments, likely serving as colonial nesting grounds. We propose that rising temperatures and reduced availability of suitable nesting sites, influenced by increased precipitation, may have prompted dinosaurs in the Shanyang Basin to migrate in search of more hospitable habitats or face extinction. Our findings underscore the significant role of climate change, particularly precipitation, in shaping the evolution of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs in the Shanyang Basin, offering insights into the potential factors contributing to the extinction of nonavian dinosaurs.
