A particle finite element model to simulate pipe-soil interactions: Penetration, consolidation and operation processes under wave loads

英文摘要 | The assessment of submarine pipeline stability requires reliable evaluation of varying soil resistance at different stages- installation, consolidation and operation- during which large deformations can occur over various time scales. In this study, an implicit dynamic saturated particle finite element method is introduced to simulate wave- pipe-soil interactions, covering the whole processes of pipeline penetration, consolidation, operation and wave loading. The model considers a number of important features that can describe the variations of material properties, boundary condition and wave loads in complex offshore environments. A comprehensive validation is conducted to evaluate soil resistance during pipe-soil interactions, and the dynamic response of seabed-pipe interactions under wave loads. The model is further applied to reproduce the centrifuge tests of pipe-soil interactions, and simulate wave-pipe-soil interactions throughout the penetration, operation and wave-loading stages, demonstrating its strong capability in assessing pipeline stability across multiple temporal scales. This work holds important implications for developing practical numerical tools for evaluating the stability of submarine pipelines in real-world offshore environments. |
