Experimental investigation of the kinetic energy cascade in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence

英文摘要The energy cascade phenomenon is studied in experiments of three-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. The instantaneous dissipation rates epsilon derived from the third-order velocity structure function equivalent to <([u(x+l)-u(x)]l/l)(3)]>=-4/5l and the instantaneous energy flux Phi(l)(x, t) derived from the local cascade rate present both positive and negative values, suggesting the existence of forward and backward cascading. The scale dependence of the energy cascading is examined with discussions on the dominant flow structures. The inverse energy cascade is more probable in the inertial range compared to in the dissipation range. Quantified by the dissipation rate epsilon and the local energy flux Phi(l)(x, t), the forward and inverse energy cascading are found to be spatially scale dependent. The temporal correlation is examined by the metric of Shannon entropy. The energy cascading quantified by the dissipation epsilon and the energy flux Phi(l)(x, t) are found to be temporally independent in the current experiments with the Shannon entropy close to unity. In addition, the highest positive values of appear in regions with high strain rates and low rotation rates, which indicates positive correlation between strain rate and the local energy flux Phi(l)(x, t).
