An experimental study of internal wave dynamics in pycnoclines: Mode transitions and characteristics

英文摘要An internal beam interacting with the pycnocline results in distinct mode characteristics. This study conducts laboratory experiments to investigate these modal characteristics in a three-layer density-stratified system using synthetic schlieren diagnostics. The internal beam is generated by harmonic oscillation from a cylinder placed in linear stratification. We implement variations in control parameters that characterize both the oscillation and the pycnocline. The experimental measurements reveal the spatiotemporal evolution of wave modes within the pycnocline, showing that statistical transitions among modes can be described by a dimensionless parameter, which quantifies the modifications to the pycnocline induced by the perturbation.
