Grazing and clipping alter conservative stomatal trait responses to warming in seven plant species in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

| 英文摘要 | Climate warming and grazing present a complex challenge for plants in the alpine grasslands of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, necessitating a balance between water conservation and carbon assimilation. To address this trade-off, plants may adjust their stomatal length (SL), stomatal density (SD), and potential maximum stomatal conductance (PCI). To investigate these adjustments, a controlled warming and summer grazing/winter clipping experiment was conducted, and SL, SD, and PCI were measured in seven plants over a four-year period (2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012). The results indicated that the majority of the plants exhibited a conservative response: significant reductions in SL and SD were observed in 2008-2009 and 2011-2012, respectively, leading to a decrease in PCI over the four-year period. This reduction may limit water loss rather than enhance carbon assimilation. Both summer grazing and winter clipping increased PCI, compensating for the reduced PCI caused by elevated temperatures, with summer grazing demonstrating a more pronounced effect. These findings suggest that, under future warming scenarios, a conservative water use strategy may be advantageous; however, the increase in PCI combined with grazing practices may exacerbate water loss. |
