Spatio-temporal dynamics of Ulva prolifera green tides inundation in nearshore waters of Shandong Peninsula

| 英文摘要 | Coastal social-ecological systems along the Shandong Peninsula have experienced persistent disruptions from Ulva prolifera (green tides) blooms since 2008. Although satellite monitoring efforts has extensively tracked offshore Ulva prolifera distributions, quantitative assessments of nearshore inundation dynamics remain scarce, hindering effective management implementation. Using multi-source satellite imagery from 2015 to 2021, this study presents a systematic analysis of the spatio-temporal patterns of Ulva prolifera inundation in the nearshore waters of Shandong Peninsula. Two distinct inundation modes were identified: (1) a reverse "infill-type" mode, characterized by initial landings near Rushan followed by stochastic dispersal governed by algal morphology under persistent northerly winds, and (2) a forward "push-type" mode, where landings initiated near Qingdao and propagated northward under variable wind directions. Wind fields were the primary driver of interannual variability in inundation timing and spatial extent, whereas the initial release conditions of Ulva prolifera and surface currents demonstrated limited predictive power. These findings provide actionable insights for developing forecasting models and adaptive management strategies, with implications for both mitigating ecological impacts and exploring the potential valorization of stranded biomass in the region. |
