Study of the silver coins along the Silk Road from the Lafu Queke Cemetery Xinjiang China

| 英文摘要 | This study presents the first scientific analysis of medieval silver coins discovered along the Silk Road in China, focusing on all nine such coins (5th-7th centuries CE) excavated from the Lafu Queke cemetery in Hami, Xinjiang. Based on the typology, six are identified to be Sasanian coins, including rare coins issued by Jamasp and Yazdgird III. The chemical composition of eight coins matches known Sasanian silver coins, while the other one, possibly from the Western Turkic Khaganate, contains a much higher gold level. Sampling analyses were conducted on two severely damaged coins, which were nearly unidentifiable, to ascertain their composition, microstructure, and provenance. These analyses suggest they were likely minted by the Sasanians. Consequently, the hypothesis, proposed by certain scholars, that oasis cities along the Silk Road in China possessed the capability to mint counterfeit Sasanian coins, remains unsupported by the evidence from the excavation of Lafu Queke cemetery. |
