Disparity between urban and rural electricity consumption in the Yellow River Basin, China

英文摘要Electricity consumption is crucial for achieving the United Nations SDG 7 and advancing urban-rural integration. But current household survey data in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) are insufficient and lack continuous updates, failing to support urban-rural differentiated or region-wide energy and electricity studies. This study fills this gap by developing a 500-m resolution dataset from 2000 to 2020 using nighttime light, prefecture-level electricity consumption, and Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) data. Key findings include: (1) A notable reduction in electricity consumption disparity between urban and rural (DUR), with per capita electricity consumption index (PECI) decreasing in urban centres and increasing in low-density rural areas. (2) PECI is highest in the upper reach, while DUR decreases most significantly in the lower reach. (3) GDP (100-500 billion RMB) and urbanization rates (over 40 %) contribute to DUR reductions, though DUR remains significant in the YRB's southwestern region. (4) Historically, urban centres had high PECI, but now suburban areas and low-density rural areas in the upper and middle reaches, as well as low-density rural areas and very low-density rural areas in the lower reaches, also show high PECI. This study provides a universal framework for analysing urban-rural electricity consumption disparities, applicable to both underdeveloped and electricity-exporting regions globally.
