Significant influence of solar activity on centennial-scale variability of Holocene peat property in Chinese peatlands

| 英文摘要 | The properties of peat strongly influence the carbon (C) sink capacity of peatlands; however, their centennial-scale variability and dynamics throughout the Holocene remain largely unknown due to limited high-resolution data. Here we present two decadal-resolution ash-free bulk density (AFBD) records from the peatlands in northeastern China and the eastern Tibetan Plateau, which show statistically significant periodicities centered on similar to 1000, similar to 710, similar to 350, similar to 210, similar to 130 years, as well as similar to 500 years, corresponding to primary solar cycles. Meanwhile, the peatland AFBD is in anti-phase with total solar irradiance (TSI), where enhanced solar activity corresponds to reduced AFBD. The spectral similarity and phase correlation with solar activity and the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) intensity variations imply the significant influence of solar activity on centennial-scale AFBD variability, likely enhanced by the modulation of the ASM. These new findings have important implications for modeling C sequestration in peatlands. |
