Large-scale single tree information extraction of oil palm in Malaysia based on sub-meter visible light satellite images

| 英文摘要 | The distribution of specific tree species and single tree information can scale down the research scale of geography and ecology, bridging research from regional to local scales. However, accurately extracting the spatial distribution and single tree information for a tree species regionally has always been a challenge due to data and algorithm constraints. With sub-meter visible light satellite images (RGB bands), we constructed a novel method for extracting the spatial distribution and single tree information of oil palm trees across Malaysia, namely the Single Tree Extraction Method-Oil Palm (STEM-OP). STEM-OP includes three algorithms: (1) a graphic morphological algorithm based on gradient difference window detection to extract the spatial distribution of oil palm plantations, (2) a double ring sliding detection algorithm to identify the canopy texture features of single oil palm trees, and (3) an adaptive iterative erosion algorithm to separate adjacent canopies into single trees. The overall accuracy of spatial distribution and number of single oil palm trees extracted by STEM-OP exceeded 90% and 80%, respectively. Our study revealed that the total area of oil palm plantations in Malaysia was 5.25 million hectares around 2022, with a total of 572.6 million oil palm trees and an average planting density of 109 palms per hectare. The study demonstrates efficiency benefits due to its use of RGB image bands and the lack of a need for training samples. The spatial distribution and single tree information of oil palm trees on a national scale are of great value to the formulation of oil palm plantation development policies and ecological protection measures. |
