Interspecific Variations in Root Mechanical, Topological, and Anatomical Traits of Shrub Species: Implications for Soil Stabilization on Slopes

| 英文摘要 | Root mechanical, topology, and anatomical traits are crucial for soil stabilization, especially on slopes. This study assessed interspecific variation in root traits among three shrub species (Amorpha fruticosa, Swida alba, and Lespedeza bicolor) to evaluate their roles in root - soil interactions. We measured tensile strength, strain, modulus of elasticity with root diameter classes, and topological traits such as branching ratio and root angle with topological orders. Anatomical traits were analyzed, and statistical analyses were employed to elucidate relationships among root traits. These findings indicate that A. fruticosa exhibits higher tensile resistance in finer roots due to dense fiber and lignified tissues, while L. bicolor demonstrates lower mechanical strength in larger roots. Enhanced branching ratios and root angles in deeper layers for A. fruticosa and S. alba support greater soil anchorage on slopes, while L. bicolor forms a dense surface network for shallow soil cohesion. Root traits and topological structures play distinct roles in soil stabilization. Our findings underscore the importance of root structural diversity for erosion control and sustainable soil management, and provide practical recommendations for selecting shrub species with specific root traits to enhance slope stability in ecological restoration projects. |
