Seasonal differences in the drivers of soil wind erosion trends in Central Asia from 1982 to 2022

| 英文摘要 | Study region: Central Asia is an important source of global aeolian dust, with severe soil wind erosion causing adverse effects on natural ecosystems and socio-economic systems. Study focus: Current research on wind erosion drivers has mainly focused on annual trends, with limited attention to seasonal dynamics. This study assessed spatiotemporal variations in Central Asia soil wind erosion using an extended revised wind erosion equation (RWEQ) model and explored its response to vegetation and climate changes across seasons. New hydrological insights: From, 1982-2022, soil wind erosion exhibited upward trends across four seasons regionally. The piecewise linear regression model identified that summer and autumn wind erosion primarily exhibited declining trends before turning points, followed by increasing trends thereafter. The multiple linear regression (MLR) model revealed that, in southern arid climate zone, wind speed fluctuations were the primary driver of wind erosion changes, while in northern cold climate zone, the driving factors varied seasonally: temperature in spring, vegetation in summer, precipitation in autumn, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in winter. Vegetation and wind erosion changes caused reversals in vegetation sand fixation trends, with significant strengthening in cold climate zone and weakening in arid climate zone after the turning points in wind erosion trends. These findings provide important insights for the implementation of wind erosion control and ecological restoration in drylands. |
