Rapid expansion of photovoltaic land in China's coastal regions: A doubling from 2020 to 2023

| 英文摘要 | Driven by SDG 7 and Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Strategy, China has accelerated the construction of Photovoltaic (PV) in its coastal regions. However, the rapid expansion of PV land in these areas has intensified land-use conflicts. This study applies an improved random forest approach to extend PV land monitoring, analyzes its spatiotemporal changes and explored its driving factors. The findings reveal that by 2023, the total area of PV land in China's coastal provinces reached 1962.89 km2, doubling the area recorded before 2020. Over 70 % of the PV land area is located north of the Yangtze River. The combined areas of Agrivoltaics and Floating PV account for 57 % of the total PV land area, while 18 % of PV land in coastal regions are distributed on marginal land. Adequate solar energy resources, suitable terrain conditions, and well-developed power infrastructure are the main driving factors for the rapid development of photovoltaic land. The potential impact of photovoltaic land on farmland cultivation and grain production is enormous, which may affect grain production by 1.97 x 105 tons. This study suggests prioritizing the use of marginal land, low-cost land, and unused land, and developing more efficient photovoltaic equipment to reduce the land area required for photovoltaic systems. This study improved the extraction algorithm to monitor PV land distribution, quantitatively analyzes the driving factors behind PV land expansion in China's coastal regions and investigates the potential impacts on agricultural production, providing scientific evidence for future policy development and regional planning of PV projects. |
