The distinct effects of digital finance inclusive on water use and carbon emissions between expansive and non-expansive cities in China

| 英文摘要 | Water shortage and carbon emissions pose significant challenges to sustainable development. Digital financial inclusion (DFI) has emerged as a transformative tool for enhancing resource efficiency, and prompting social equity. However, its effects on water use (WU) and carbon emissions (CE) as well as the latent mechanisms remain unclear. To fill this gap, we investigate the relation of DFI to WU and CE across 278 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2022 using panel regression models. Results reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship, with optimal DFI thresholds of 3.94 for WU and 3.06 for CE, beyond which further financial inclusion contributes to reductions in resource consumption. We further find that the expansive cities exhibit nonlinear responses to DFI, whereas the non-expansive cities show a linear positive effect. Mechanism analysis suggests that DFI enhances WU through quality improvement and reduces CE via industrial structure, while in the non-expansive cities, DFI-driven technology innovation reduces CE but increases pressure on WU. These emphasize the potential of DFI to support sustainable water-carbon management and the need for region-specific policies to maximize its benefits. |
