Hourly-scale characterization of extreme precipitation events in China from a 3D perspective

| 英文摘要 | Extreme precipitation events evolve continuously in time and space, usually persisting for dozens of hours. Understanding their behavior from the three-dimensional (3D, longitude-latitude-time) perspective is critical for impact mitigation. However, this remains limited at hourly scales, mainly due to the lack of suitable identification methods. Here, we propose an improved tracking approach that fits well with the actual precipitation process to identify hourly spatiotemporal continuous extreme precipitation events (HSCEPEs). The mean state and seasonal characteristics of HSCEPEs are analyzed in China from 2008 to 2017. HSCEPEs display distinct regional patterns, with large-magnitude and wide-covered ones predominantly centered in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Seasonally, spring events exhibit the highest mean magnitude, accumulated area, and projected area, while summer events account for the highest proportion and intensity. Our findings provide valuable methodological and empirical references for accurately assessing extreme precipitation events, with implications for improved forecasting and disaster risk reduction. |
