An integrated framework using water stability indices and spatial autocorrelation for detecting and mapping scaling-corrosion risks in arid groundwater-surface water systems

| 英文摘要 | In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), safeguarding water supply infrastructure in arid, water-stressed regions demands high-resolution, spatially explicit risk assessment. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of scaling-corrosive tendencies and overall water quality in 39 surface-and groundwater samples from Wadi Abbady basin (Egypt), based on twelve key physicochemical parameters (pH, T, EC, TDS, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, HCO3-). Four established water stability indices (WSIs)-Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), Ryznar Stability Index (RSI), Puckorius Scaling Index (PSI), and Larson-Skold Index (L-SKI)-were integrated with multiple linear regression (MLR), spatial autocorrelation analysis, and water quality index (WQI). The LSI, RSI and PSI indicate moderate to high scaling potential in most samples, with MLR confirming salinity, carbonate buffering, and aggressive anions as the dominant predictors (R-2 = 0.81-0.97; p < 0.0001). Moran's index reveals significant clustering of scaling-prone zones in the northeastern part of the basin (Moran's index = 0.51 for RSI; 0.37 for PSI), whereas the southwestern part exhibits pronounced corrosion risk associated with elevated chloride and sulfate concentrations. WQI results show that Quaternary aquifer and surface water samples are mostly excellent to good, while the Nubian Sandstone aquifer is characterized by fair to unsuitable water quality. Based on these findings, there is an urgent need for site-specific mitigation strategies-including pH adjustment, selective ion removal (e.g., sulfate reduction via reverse osmosis), and targeted corrosion control-to enhance the resilience and sustainability of water supply systems under current arid hydrochemical conditions. |
