Comparative study of embodied carbon emissions from building sector of megacities in East Asia

| 英文摘要 | Enhancing the exploration of embodied carbon emissions (ECEs) from buildings stock in megacities plays a crucial part in effective urban management for carbon reduction. However, the limited building information has hampered the research on ECEs on multiple spatiotemporal scales, and there is a lack of comparative research on cities in different countries. Therefore, this study selected Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo as study areas and constructed a framework for estimating ECEs from building materials production by integrating geographical data and statistical data, then analyzed the multi-scale characteristics and influencing factors of ECEs in 2000 and 2020. The growth of ECEs in Beijing and Shanghai was higher than that of Tokyo and there were significant differences in spatial changes of ECEs between three megacities. Emission intensity, floor area per capita, and population have exacerbated the growth of ECEs, and the ECEs reduction effect of vertical growth in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo was 283 million tons, 223 million tons, and 82 million tons, respectively. The results showed the validity of the estimation framework of ECEs and highlighted the role of main influencing factors in rational planning of urban construction from the perspective of urban growth. |
