Disentangling the intricate nexus among economic growth, urbanization, carbon emission and human well-being: The evidence from 143 countries

| 英文摘要 | Enhancing global human well-being is a core objective of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although often perceived as key drivers of human well-being, the impacts of urbanization, economic growth, and energy consumption remain unclear when assessed under planetary pressure constraints at the global scale. This study employs the novel Planetary Pressures-Adjusted Human Development Index (PHDI) as a metric of human well-being. By integrating Dagum Gini index decomposition, panel cointegration estimation, Granger causality tests, and impulse-response functions, it further investigates global geographical inequality and examines the long-term, short-term, and bidirectional effects of economic growth, urbanization, and carbon emissions on PHDI, using panel data from 143 countries spanning 1995 to 2023. The spatial analyses reveal significant disparities and a catch-up effect, as lower-PHDI regions experienced faster improvements in wellbeing.
