Phosphorus recovery from urban wastewater treatment in China: Current status, future potential and a roadmap for sustainable development

| 英文摘要 | There is a clear and pressing need to better manage phosphorus from wastewater treatment that processes vast amounts of wastewater in China. In this paper, we first present a concise review of typical phosphorus recovery technologies, summarizing their advantages and disadvantages. Subsequently, we conduct a quantitative assessment of the current status and potential of phosphorus recovery from wastewater treatment, leveraging high-resolution plant-level and city-level data in China. Our estimations suggest that the current practices, primarily through land application, recover about 21 % of the phosphorus (approximately 39 thousand tonnes) in wastewater, with high spatial disparity. Four scenarios for phosphorus recovery, considering different technologies, provide valuable insights into the potential for increased recovery. The application of sludge incineration ash has the highest potential, which can increase the current phosphorus recovery rate to approximately 85 %. Finally, we develop a roadmap for national phosphorus recovery that prioritizes implementing advanced technologies in economically developed cities before extending the approach nationwide. |
