| 英文摘要 | We propose a multidimensional urban-scaling framework that evaluates the efficiency of Chinese cities by combining demographic, economic, and spatial lenses. Using annual data for 608 prefecture-level units from 2000 to 2018, we move beyond the population-only paradigm to examine how economic output (GDP) and built-up land area expand relative to population size, and how these scale relationships are reshaped by China's hierarchical governance structure. Methodologically, we estimate log - log scaling coefficients for each year and for each administrative tier, and we compare these with city-specific longitudinal regressions. The results confirm pronounced superlinear scaling of GDP with population (beta approximate to 1.10-1.40), implying that agglomeration economies enable large cities to generate disproportionately high economic value. In contrast, built-up area scales sublinearly (beta approximate to 0.60-0.90), signalling that bigger cities consume land more sparingly as density rises. Infrastructure indicators generally follow intermediate or sublinear patterns, reflecting improvements in service efficiency at scale. However, efficiency gains are not uniform across tiers. Provincial-level cities exhibit steeper GDP exponents and smaller land exponents than prefecture - or county-level cities, demonstrating their superior capacity to translate size into productivity while containing sprawl. County-level cities often hover around linearity, revealing institutional and resource constraints that blunt agglomeration advantages. By integrating administrative hierarchy into urban-scaling analysis, the study illuminates how governance powers condition the returns to size. This comprehensive framework advances the understanding of how administrative structures impact urban system performance, providing insights for policymakers to balance economic growth with sustainable land use and infrastructure management. |
