Sequential faulting facilitating the Caroline Ridge subducting into the trench: Evidence from new multichannel seismic data in the Yap subduction zone, West Pacific

| 英文摘要 | The evolutionary model of oceanic plateau basement faulting during subduction has yet to be resolved. Here, we identify a novel subduction mechanism involving the top of the oceanic plateau basement, as revealed by newly acquired multichannel seismic data from the Yap subduction zone. Seismic profile analysis reveals that within the overlying plate, the basement architecture exhibits high-amplitude, inclined intrabasement reflections in a local region. Along the front of the subducting plate, integrated seismic profiles and instantaneous amplitude maps reveal that intrabasement reflections are relatively horizontal approximately 40-100 km from the trench. Within 0-35 km from the trench, a series of high-amplitude arcward-dipping and seaward-dipping faults appear within the basement. High-amplitude, irregular intrabasement reflections with listric features start to emerge, showing dip angles that are smaller than those of the arcward-dipping and seaward-dipping faults and extending into the crust. These observations indicate the formation of detachment faults. At the trench, layered reflections at the front of the subducting oceanic plateau display folded morphologies bordered by a prominent arcward reflector. This morphology suggests the formation of a plate interface. Our findings suggest that the process of the oceanic plateau subducting into the trench involves sequential faulting, with the transition being from normal faults to detachment faults and then to a plate interface as one approaches the trench. Multistage faulting at the front of the subducting oceanic plateau might promote the transport of fluids. |
