Investigation of a bio-gel for concrete crack repair and corrosion inhibition of steel bars

| 英文摘要 | The microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technique has been widely studied in repairing concrete cracks. However, when this technology is used to repair cracks, its effect on the steel bar corrosion deserves further investigation. This study aims to investigate the effect of MICP on steel bar corrosion while using MICP technology for concrete crack repair. The bio-gel, prepared by combining bacterial solution with calcium alginate, served as a crack-sealing and chloride-binding material. Bio-mineralization was deposited both within the gel and in the cracks. The chloride ion adsorption capacity of bio-gel reached 118.3 mg/g, which was 31.6 % higher than that of pure gel. The electrochemical results showed that the bacterial solution caused steel bar corrosion, while bio-gel significantly inhibited it. The corrosion current density (icorr) of the steel bar covered with bio-gel decreased by three orders of magnitude. The effect of the bio-gel in inhibiting corrosion was further confirmed in reinforced concrete specimens, where the icorr of the steel bar covered by bio-gel decreased by 88.7 % compared with that in the cracked specimens. |
