Impacts of Kuroshio intrusion on algal blooms in the coastal waters adjacent to the Changjiang River estuary

英文摘要The Nearshore Kuroshio Branch Current (NKBC) in the East China Sea can extend across the continental shelf and reach the coastal waters adjacent to the Changjiang River estuary (CRE), where intensive blooms of dinoflagellates have been recorded for more than two decades. To understand the seasonal dynamics of dinoflagellate blooms and their relationship with NKBC intrusion in this region, monthly investigations were conducted from February 2015 to January 2016. During the investigations, a bloom of dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense, accompanied by diatom Thalassiosira spp., occurred near the CRE in mid-April. Another bloom of diatoms dominated by Cylindrotheca closterium and Thalassiosira spp. showed up in July. The bloom of P. donghaiense in 2015 broke out about 15-30 days earlier than other years, with a notably lower magnitude (in terms of chlorophyll a level). The early outbreak of P. donghaiense bloom was likely promoted by the joint effects of blooming microalgae transportation, temperature increase, and phosphate enrichment associated with the early and strong intrusion of the NKBC from March 2015. The results highlight potential impacts of NKBC on the timing and scale of dinoflagellate blooms in the coastal waters adjacent to the CRE.
