Corrosion characterization in SLM-manufactured and wrought 316 L Stainless Steel induced by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans

英文摘要Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a significant concern in materials used for industrial applications, particularly in environments where sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) like Desulfovibrio desulfuricans thrive. This study investigated the corrosion behavior of Selective Laser Melted (SLM) versus wrought 316 L stainless steel (SS) caused by D. desulfuricans. SLM 316 L SS exhibited better corrosion resistance with a corrosion current density of 0.012 mA/cm2, approximately 8.8 times lower than that of wrought 316 L SS. Localized pitting analysis indicated that SLM 316 L SS demonstrates enhanced resistance to localized pitting corrosion, correlating with a sparser and less adhesive biofilm formation on its surface. This improved performance was attributed to the denserpassivation film formed on SLM 316 L SS in the corrosive environment, highlighting its enhanced resistance against D. desulfuricans-induced corrosion. The MIC resistance of SLM 316 L SS was increased by a factor of 8.8 compared to wrought 316 L SS.
