Inhibiting of softening behavior in AA2219 laser welded joints

英文摘要The joint softening of AA2219 welded structure has significantly plagued its application in the aerospace industry. In this study, a connection strategy that utilizes oscillating laser beam welding (OLBW) combined with post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) was proposed to inhibit joint softening. Using a multiscale correlative methodology, from the millimeter scale to the nanoscale, we shed light on the failure mechanisms of AA2219 joints fabricated by OLBW. Apart from the macroscopic defects such as pores and collapses, the segregation of strengthening elements at grain boundaries in the fusion zone (FZ) is the primary cause of joint softening. The synergistic effect makes a discontinuous distribution of 0-Al2Cu at grain boundaries and a higher density of nano- sized precipitates (0-Al2Cu, 0 '-Al2Cu) in the grain inner, making the tensile strength significantly higher than that of conventionally laser welded joints, and even approaching that of the base metal (BM).
