Anionic redox in layered oxide cathodes for sodium ion batteries: Triggering, degradation and modification

英文摘要Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are extensively researched as the next-generation sustainable energy technology due to their significant natural abundance and low cost, making them attractive for large-scale energy storage systems (EESs) and smart grids. Layered oxides have emerged as a focal point of SIB cathode material research owing to their low cost, simple synthesis process, and high specific capacity. Despite substantial progress in exploring layered transition metal oxides for SIB cathodes, their performance has reached a bottleneck, hindering further practical applications. Consequently, anionic redox in layered transition metal oxides has emerged as a new paradigm for enhancing the energy density of rechargeable batteries. This review summarizes recent advances in anionic redox within Mn-based layered oxide cathodes for SIBs, encompassing the triggering mechanisms, causes of degradation, and modification strategies. It emphasizes the electrochemical curve characteristics of these materials and provides a detailed analysis. This review aims to offer a foundational understanding of anionic redox in Mn-based layered oxide cathodes for sodium ion batteries and provides insights and recommendations for future development directions.
