Assessment of flood risk in Northern and Southern Laos using geospatial data

| 英文摘要 | Flooding, a global threat driven by climate change, urbanization, and unsustainable land management, disproportionately affects rural communities in Southeast Asia, particularly in Laos. The study employs remote sensing, GIS modeling, and the hydrodynamic model HEC-RAS to investigate flood dynamics and water retention patterns in Laos. Our findings show that the southern region is more prone to flooding due to its lower elevation, extensive floodplains, and higher water retention capacity. On other hand, the northern region, which is characterized by steeper slopes and deeper river systems, experiences rapid runoff and localized flooding. We have classified 14.88% of the areas as high risk, while the northern region has the lowest risk with only 6.76%. Furthermore, the study compares the flood risk in distances and percentage ratios between the South and North regions between 2018 and 2022. The South region observed a decrease in flood risk from 93 km2 to 90 km2. In contrast, the flood risk in the North region increased from 134 km2 to 140 km2. The northern river network has a higher water flow of 118,500 m(3)/s and deeper channels reaching 184.63 m. This allows it to hold more water compared to the smaller and less active southern river network. |
