英文摘要The impacts of extreme climate events caused by climate change on food systems have attracted global concern. However, to what degree and through which mechanisms extreme climate events affect the consumption remains insufficiently understood. We integrate the response trend model, ML algorithm, and GTWR models to systematically assess the impact of 11 climate risk factors on plant-based and animal-based food consumption across 359 cities in China from 2000 to 2020. Results reveal that the relative importance of extreme climate on consumption ranges between 15% and 55%, with pronounced heterogeneity. Under extreme temperature stress, Northeast and western China exhibit a significant reliance on plant-based foods. Short-term precipitation shocks stimulate animal-based food consumption while suppressing plant-based food intake, with the magnitude of these effects decreasing from eastern to western regions. Drought risk simultaneously increases the consumption of both plant-based and animal-based foods. Policymakers should adopt measures such as climate signal-based early warning systems and develop climate adaptation strategies for regional socioeconomic contexts to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of food systems.
