Unravelling nonlinear and interactive effects of urban fragmentation on carbon emissions in transitioning metropolitan areas

英文摘要The essential role of a low-carbon built environment in achieving urban sustainability has been widely recognised. Despite the growing interest in urban form within climate change research, quantitative assessments of the nonlinear effects of urban fragmentation on carbon emissions remain limited. This paper therefore proposes a novel framework to examine the nonlinear and interactive relationships between urban fragmentation and carbon emissions. The Wuhan metropolitan area is selected as a representative case of low-carbon transition due to its unique urban development, built environment and energy consumption. Urban fragmentation is evaluated through morphological, connectional and functional forms, capturing various spatial characteristics. The findings indicate that highly fragmented areas typically correspond to urban fringes characterised by disconnected communities, industrial clusters and substantial functional conflicts. Carbon emissions display clear spatial clustering, with central urban areas and urban fringes showing similar total carbon emissions but markedly different industrial emission levels. Complex interdependencies are observed among urban fragmentation forms, ecological density and socio-economic variables such as GDP density and population density. More specifically, the morphological, connectional and functional forms of urban fragmentation are all positively associated with carbon emissions. The combined (binary and nonlinear) interactions among variables significantly enhance the explanatory power of carbon emissions beyond their individual effects, revealing the synergistic influence of urban form, socio-economic activity and ecological configuration. These results provide evidence-based insights to guide low-carbon transitions in metropolitan areas.
