| 英文摘要 | Traditional agricultural systems in rural regions have proved sustainable as many smallholder farmers draw upon local indigenous knowledge and historical insights to navigate environmental changes. However, farmers' livelihood adaptive strategies were less concerned with their value perceptions besides the better explored socioeconomic affecting factors in current research. Thus, we explored how farmers' subjective value perceptions of traditional agricultural systems interact with rural livelihood practices and eventually affect the systems' sustainability. Taking the Chaozhou Dancong Tea Cultural System in China as a case study, we collected 212 valid questionnaires and conducted in-depth interviews in 2022 and 2023 using a mixed-method approach. Our findings reveal that smallholder farmers' value perceptions of traditional agricultural systems have a multidimensional structure, centred on economic and ecological values and accompanied by diverse additional values. These value perceptions collectively shape the formation and choice of livelihood strategies. The heterogeneity in livelihood strategies also reflects the diversity in the prioritisation of values and the lack of capacity to achieve the preferred value, which constitutes the value-action gap. Through the interaction of intrinsic motivation and external conditions, value perceptions shape farmers' adaptive strategy choices within constrained livelihood freedom. Moreover, mismatches between value perceptions and transformative capacities contribute to heterogeneity in livelihood strategies and variations in adaptive capacity. The external rural policy instruments, represented by the Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (IAHS) policies, are essential to broaden farmers' value perceptions on agroecosystem multifunctionality and enhance their capability for value-added transformation of non-economic values. This study improves our understanding of traditional agriculture's multiple benefits and suggests innovative paths to support rural sustainable development through farmer-centred approaches. |
