Profiling virtual cross-regional patient mobility in China: patterns and determinants

| 英文摘要 | Telehealth is breaking spatial constraints, resulting in a screen-to-screen mode of health-seeking interaction and facilitating substantial cross-regional virtual patient mobility. This emerging dynamic is reshaping the interplay between healthcare supply and demand, and redefining health-seeking behaviors in the digital era. While previous research has largely focused on physical patient mobility, little is known about the spatial patterns and underlying drivers of virtual patient mobility. Drawing on large-scale online consultation data, this study constructs an inter-provincial virtual patient mobility network in China, and explores its spatial patterns and determinants. The results reveal pronounced spatial clustering in terms of both telehealth supply and demand, with Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong serving as central hubs. Spatially, virtual patient mobility does not break the traditional east-high, west-low pattern observed in physical patient mobility. Socioeconomic status, demographic characteristics, digital infrastructure, healthcare resources, and geographic proximity collectively shape these spatial patterns. These findings provide new insights into how telehealth is restructuring regional healthcare systems and offer a scientific foundation for promoting more equitable digital health resource allocation and targeted policy interventions. |
