Intraseasonal Variability of the Full-Depth Currents in the Southern Philippine Basin Driven by the Remote Wind

英文摘要Intraseasonal variations (ISVs) in the southern Philippine Basin (SPB) are investigated based on 2 years of measurements from two full-depth moorings deployed in the center region of the SPB. The ISVs around 90 days are revealed to contribute significantly to the variability in the current, accounting for-62% of the subinertial variance. It propagates westward with different phase speed vertically, larger in the surface layer (-20 cm s21) and smaller in the mid-and deep layers (-6 cm s21). In the surface layer, the 90-day ISV has the characteristics of the first baroclinic Rossby wave. Driven by the wind forcing, it is generated in the ocean southeast of the SPB and propagates into SPB along the potential vorticity isolines. Combined with the reanalysis data, it is found that 90-day ISV in the mid-and deep layers is regulated by the barotropic Rossby normal mode. The first baroclinic Rossby wave propagating from outside the basin matches the resonance frequency of SPB and triggers the barotropic Rossby normal mode, which dominates the deep temporal variability of SPB.
