Enrichment and transport mechanism of organochlorine pesticides in the Western Pacific Ocean: Particle size distribution and eddy accumulation

| 英文摘要 | Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), as representative persistent organic pollutants, have drawn extensive attention for their distribution and transport in global oceans, with the Western Pacific serving as a crucial pollutant sink in global biogeochemical cycles. In this study, the OCP concentrations in the Western Pacific region were measured to be 62 - 3394 pg/L in surface water and 19 - 605 pg/m(3)in air. The OCP concentrations in the open ocean fluctuated substantially, being ten times higher at the edge of an eddy (site A16, 3394 pg/L) than in the surrounding region (site A15, 130 pg/L). In addition, samples collected using stage filtration equipment revealed that hydrophobic OCPs tend to adsorb onto small particles with larger specific surface areas. Particle transport by ocean currents exhibits size-selectivity, suggesting that the transport fates of OCPs with different solubilities also vary under oceanic influences. Furthermore, stage filtration samples (particle size: >5 mu m, 5 mu m-200 nm, 200 nm-5 nm, and water) revealed that over 20% of OCPs adsorb on particles smaller than 700 nm. Thus, separating the dissolved and particulate phases through a 700-nm filter may overestimate the OCP concentration in the dissolved phase, leading to inaccurate calculations of parameters such as the air-water exchange flux. These findings will enhance our understanding of the transport mechanisms of OCPs and similar organic pollutants in oceans. |
