No promoting effect of low alumina content on the kinetics of olivine serpentinization and hydrogen production at 300 °C

英文摘要Hydrogen (H-2) generated during serpentinization is a critical primary energy source for microbial communities in hydrothermal vent fields, but factors governing H-2 generation during serpentinization are still not well understood. We conducted experiments at 300 degrees C and 3.0 kbar by reacting olivine (with and without Al2O3) with 0.5 mol/L NaCl solutions. With 6.5 wt% Al2O3, brucite and serpentine formed. Serpentine contained Al2O3 contents ranging from 3.3 to 30.6 wt%, with aluminum (Al) concentrations positively correlated with FeO content. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping confirmed Al incorporation into brucite, where higher Al2O3 contents corresponded to lower FeO levels. Experiments with Al addition yielded 51.2 mmol/kg H-2, accompanied by <9% serpentine after 59 days. By contrast, Al-free systems produced nearly twice the H-2, with 18 wt% serpentine formed. This suggests that moderate alumina addition (6.5 wt%) impedes serpentinization-driven H-2 generation by altering iron partitioning into brucite and serpentine.
