Corrosion Mechanism of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Coated Magnesium Alloy with Laser Surface Melting Pretreatment

英文摘要A comparison of corrosion process and mechanism between the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coated magnesium alloy and PEO coated magnesium alloy with laser surface melting (LSM-PEO) pretreatment was made based on our previous work. The corrosion tests were carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement in 0.1 M NaCl solution and salt spray tests' in 5 wt% NaCl solution. Results showed that the LSM-PEO coated magnesium alloy could bear a longer time of exposure than the PEO coated one. The PEO coated magnesium alloy underwent severe localized corrosion, while localized corrosion was effectively retarded for the LSM-PEO treatment. The different corrosion processes between the PEO and LSM-PEO treated magnesium alloy can be ascribed to the decrease of defects in the PEO coating and the different roles of the beta-phase in the substrate after LSM treatment.
