Magnetocaloric properties of the LaFe11.7Si1.3 and LaFe11.2Co0.7Si1.1 systems

中文摘要The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the itinerant electron metamagnetic (IEM) compounds LaFe11.7Si1.3 and LaFe11.2Co0.7Si1.1 has been measured directly and calculated from magnetization data using Maxwell relation. The largest values of the MCE have been observed in the vicinity of the first-order magnetostructural phase transitions at 188 K for LaFe11.7Si1.3 and 274 K for LaFe11.2Co0.7Si1.1. The isothermal magnetic entropy change induced by magnetic field change of 5 T reached in these materials 29 J/Kg K (212 mJ/cm(3) K) and 20.3 J/Kg K (149 mJ/cm(3) K). The directly measured normalized adiabatic temperature change was 2.9 and 2.2 K/T, correspondingly. The appreciably large observed values of the MCE were attributed to release of entropy due to the first-order phase transition induced by external magnetic field. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
