Changes in plant diversity and soil properties resulting from Eucalyptus plantations in southwestern Yunnan, China

中文摘要To investigate the effects of Eucalyptus plantations on plant diversity and soil properties, a field trial was carried out in southwestern Yunnan, China. Four local types of vegetation were selected, including Eucalyptus robusta forest (EP), a natural secondary forest (NF), Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis forest (PP), and sections of abandoned farmland (AF). The results showed that Eucalyptus plantations were found to reduce the growth rate and regenerative capacity of the understory vegetation. The topsoil of the EP had the highest moisture content (MC) and soil bulk density (SBD), as well as higher concentrations of rapidly available soil nutrients. However, the total amount of available soil nutrients was much lower in the EP. Moreover, the Eucalyptus plantations were found to have high levels of cadmium in the topsoil. We suggest that Eucalyptus trees be planted in abandoned farmlands using proper management practices, which would not only provide timber for commercial purposes but also allow the natural biodiversity to flourish.
