Black-hole accretion history of active galactic nuclei

| 英文摘要 | The growth of massive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been extensively studied in recent years, and the lifetime of a bright AGN has been realized to be short compared with the Hubble timescale. The AGN activity may probably be triggered by a merger of two galaxies; then, the AGN shine blows away the gases near the black hole, and the AGN activity is quenched. In this scenario, every bright AGN will finally undergo a faint phase. Except for those in the local universe, most faint AGNs have not been detected by observations. In this paper, we show how we can infer the black-hole accretion evolving with time in faint AGNs from the cosmological hard X-ray background and the AGN Eddington ratio distribution. We found that the timescale t(RIAF) of the radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) accreting at similar to m(crit) should be shorter than similar to 10(-2)t(b) if m(crit) = 0.01, where t(b) is the lifetime of bright AGNs; i.e., m declines from m(crit) to a rate significantly lower than m(crit) within t(RIAF). |
