As a big mountain country , China boasts a mountain area of 6.65 million km2, which accounts for 69.27 % of its total land. Mountains have not only made remarkable contributions to China as a whole in its development and splendid
Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has focuscd its studies chiefly on the upper Yangtze River, the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Southwest China whi1e facing the who1e country and the outside world, and done a lot of theoretic and practical researches in the fields of mountain hazards, mountain environment and mountain development.
