As a big mountain country , China boasts a mountain area of 6.65 million km2, which accounts for 69.27 % of its total land. Mountains have not only made remarkable contributions to China as a whole in its development and splendid
civilization in history, but also have an important strategic role for future sustainable development of China. The abundant resources , peculiar environment, vast land, ethnic diversity , cultural diversity , species diversity and landscape diversity in mountains have their own features. The economic backwardness , ecological fragility ,
inaccessibility and closeness in mountains may, however, be obstacles for mountain people to achieve sustainable dcvclopmcnt.

Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has focuscd its studies chiefly on the upper Yangtze River, the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Southwest China whi1e facing the who1e country and the outside world, and done a lot of theoretic and practical researches in the fields of mountain hazards, mountain environment and mountain development. This special issue has addressed such critical and key issues as mountain deve1opment , mountain environment and control of mountain hazards , including the structure, function and evolution of
mountain ecosystem, circulation of matter and energy in mountain environment, monitoring , restoration and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystcms , asscssment of human impact on mountain ecosystem, warning and adjustment of mountain ecoenvironment , which may rcf1cct thc main aspects of researches done in the institute. It is a valuab1e opportunity for us to strengthen academic exchange with our colleagues in other countries and we would appreciate any advice and suggestions on our future work.
