A method to evaluate the overall performance of the CAS-W1 airfoils for wind turbines

英文摘要This paper presents an evaluation method with a performance parameter system of wind turbine airfoils, and then estimates the overall performance of the CAS-W1 airfoils compared with some DU airfoils with available experimental data. The CAS-W1 airfoil family is developed by Institute of Engineering Thermophysics with the XFOIL code. The family includes 11 airfoils, whose relative thickness ranges from 15% to 60%. Four thin airfoils and three thick airfoils have been measured in NF-3 wind tunnel in Northwestern Polytechnical University. Different from previous airfoil performance analysis, the evaluation herein focuses on design point, off-design performance, stalling characteristic, and performance stability. Results show that, compared with DU airfoils, thin CAS-W1 airfoils have favorable design point, good off-design performance, and could keep stable with the variation of surface roughness and Reynolds number; Three inboard airfoils have soft stall performance but ordinary design point and off-design characteristics.
